REGULATIONS
Many higly expereinces builders who started work in the 70 and 80s are still working today, and generally have expereince and expertise over modern qulifications.
Building regulations, design and control are standard, which all builders must comply. NVQs and suchlike are only required for working for larger building firms, contractors and sizable building sites.
Rick is 'old school' in his sixties and started working before many rules became regulations and before trade qualifications existed. For Rick it's in the job and word of mouth that gets folk coming back.
The following trades do not need license or qualifications - expereince, competance and quality are king.
Painting/decorating
Repairs or maintenance
Carpentry/joinery
Plastering/rendering
General building
Extensions/structural alterations
Electrical engineering
Electrical mains work (mains work must be signed off)
Gas (Gas Safe registration required for relevant work)
Work on commercial construction sites (CSCS/site requirements often become relevant)
Self-certifying certain Building Regulations work (Usually requires appropriate Competent Person Scheme membership)
The Building Regulations themselves don't simply say that every person physically carrying out building work must hold a particular qualification; the legislation has historically focused on compliance of the work, while the newer Building Safety Act framework also places greater emphasis on competence.
